CHRISTOPHER NOLAN REPONDS

Late Friday night a senseless tragedy struck the Aurora, Colorado area. A sick and cruel young man enacted a horrendous mass murder upon an unsuspecting audience at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. This act claimed the lives of several people and left many more broken and wounded. Some time yesterday, Christopher Nolan issued a statement to the victims...

Christopher Nolan Reponds

"Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community.

I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime.

The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me.

Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."

Public calls on Christian Bale

People are calling upon the caped crusader in the wake of the Colorado theater shooting with the 21st century bat signal: social media.

On Twitter Friday, the hashtag #BaleOutAurora, called for "Dark Knight Rises" star Christian Bale to come to Aurora and visit injured children in the hospital while donning his famous Batman costume. The campaign seems to stem from a Facebook post that that was screen-capped and spread virally in which the writer urged Bale to act accordingly because the children involved in the massacre need a reminder that "heroes can be real too, not just bad guys."

Editor's note: In times like these it's important to remember that a single individual purported this cowardly act and that a film about comic book hero is not responsible for such violence.

Christopher Nolan's Batman films are about hope and hope is what we need right now. My thoughts are with the families who have been affected by this horrible event.
